Use of Hot Tub Chemicals

Remy Jirek

Introduction
The use of hot tub chemicals will make sure that your hot tub, hot pool, or spa is kept clean and bacteria free. When buying chemicals for your hot tub you want to make sure you read the labels to ensure you are getting what you need. Not all chemicals will kill all the bacteria that is present. You need chemicals that can kill the bacteria despite the high temperature of the water. The warm water is a great place for bacteria to grow, so you want the chemicals that will kill them so as to keep your hot tub a clean place you can relax.

To help reduce the potential for water-borne bacteria growing in your water, hot tub chemicals are designed for use in hot water. They are also available to help keep the hot tub water crystal clear.

Keeping the water sanitized is extremely important to stunt the growth of hazardous bacteria. While chlorine may be fine for swimming pools, the hot water environment doesn't make it one of the ideal hot tub chemicals for sanitizing. There is a chlorine-based, sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione, which does work in warm water, but is recommended only to shock the water.

The most popular sanitizer in hot tubs is sodium bromide which comes in tablet form and can be used in floating disbursement devices, or in granular form for immediate disbursement into the water. This works well when adding or raising the water level and adding other hot tub chemicals.

The addition of hot tub chemicals should become a daily routine, checking the water first and then adding the correct amount to bring the levels to the desired rate. Similarly, pH factor in the water will help keep it clean and clear. Ideally, it shout be slightly above a neutral seven, and guidelines recommend a pH level of between 7.2 and 7.6. There are many brand names of hot tub chemicals to keep it in this range and signify their function by name, such as pH-Plus or pH-minus.

Many Chemicals Perform Many Functions

People will get in and out of the water between tanning sessions and the lotion will come off into the water. As will natural body oils and sweat. There are hot tub chemicals like purifiers that help break these oils down and remove them from the water. Cleaners to remove water line scum are also available, usually in a paste form.

Whenever water is moved rapidly by jets of pressure, foam is bound to form. Anti-foaming hot tub chemicals can keep it from occurring, and if it's too late for that, there are others that can get rid of it virtually instantly.

Depending on the hardness of your water supply, you may need hot tub chemicals to help remove calcium and lime deposits from building up. They will make your water look murky and ruin water pumps and possibly the pipes themselves. There are hot tub chemicals available to help break these compounds down and clean them out of your tub.
